photo by Sarah A. Miller/Tyler Morning Telegraph Katie Wilkey, 13, of Athens, drops a toy hamburger covered in ketchup into a bucket during the Whataburger Bobbing for Burgers competition at the Uncle Fletch Hamburger Festival in Athens, Texas Saturday Sept. 20, 2014. Competitors had to pull rubber toy hamburgers out of a large bucket filled with ketchup and deposit them in a separate bucket. The festival honors Fletcher Davis, an Athens resident who according to a Texas House Resolution may have been the originator of the hamburger in the United States. The resolution states, "The staff at McDonald's management training center has traced its beginnings back to the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, where it was sold on the midway; a reporter for the New York Tribune, writing about the fair, made note of the new sandwich in an article and commented that it was the vendor's own creation." The vendor was Fletch Davis.
