5/16/12 Refresh Leadership 2 w/Emmitt Smith & Troy Aikman

- Former Dallas Cowboys greats Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman joined other speakers in Tyler on Wednesday, 5/16/12, for Refresh Leadership, a local event that was simulcast nationwide. The event began with a complimentary breakfast from 6:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
Andy Buckley, known for his role as David Wallace on the television show “The Office,” served as master of ceremonies, giving welcoming remarks at 8 a.m. and closing the show at 11:25 a.m.
Leadership consultant, speaker and best-selling author Patrick Lencioni was the first speaker at 8:05 a.m. Based on his model in his first best-selling book, “The Five Temptations of a CEO,” Lencioni identified the natural human tendencies that plague all leaders, often preventing them from fulfilling their potential, and offered actionable advice on how to overcome these common behavioral pitfalls.
Starting at 9:20 a.m., former Dallas Cowboys and Pro Football Hall of Famers Aikman and Smith held a question-and-answer session to give participants a chance to learn leadership tips and advice they learned as members of one of the most prolific professional football teams in history.
The last speaker, sociologist, author, lecturer and educator Dr. Bertice Berry, started her presentation at 10:30 a.m. She discussed the importance of finding purpose in life and leading others to find theirs. She identified different learning styles and how crucial it is to learn the style that works best “for you and the people you lead.”

5/14/12 Fire In Home At Chilton & Mockingbird

- A home at the intersection of Chilton and Mockingbird in Tyler sustained heavy damage in a fire that was called in shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday, 5/14/12.
When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming out of a second-story window. The fire was quickly put under control. Photos in this album were submitted to Tyler Paper by citizen journalist Danny Saenz.

5/14/2012 Trailblazer Monorail House - Star Of 1956 Texas State Fair

- The suspended monorail was built in 1956 for the Texas State Fair at Fair Park in Dallas. The car now resides as residential property in Wills Point. Gillian Stewart and her husband Roger have lived in their home, which includes the monorail kitchen, since 1997.

5/12/12 26th Annual UT Tyler Hole-In-One Contest Launch

- The UT Tyler Suddenlink Patriot Million Dollar Hole-In-One Contest has resulted in more than 250 scholarships worth more than $1 million being awarded to UT Tyler students. On Friday, 5/11/12, two more scholarships were given, at UT Tyler's University Center during the launch party for the 26th annual contest. Stephanie Roberts presented the Stephen Roberts Scholarship to Lisa Womack, a criminal justice major from Overton now pursuing her master's degree. UT Tyler Chief of Police Mike Medders presented the Tommy Lee Memorial Scholarship to Samanta Rodriguez, a criminal justice major from Athens.
